I once heard that there are 7 words in English that are hardest to say — but have the greatest payoff. Those words are:
I’m sorry.
Forgive me.
I love you.
Why is it so hard to say those words? When you’ve been in an argument and maybe did or said things that you regret — why do these words come so painfully? Our walls go up. We all have a defensive stance regarding our hearts and our position, even against the person you know loves you the most. Sometimes, maybe often, there is a part of you that knows you’re right, but the delivery of your correctness was a little bit sideways. Or maybe a lot sideways — tone can cut just as deep as words. And undoubtedly you know within your heart that you’ve hurt your partner. So as hard as it might be, someone has to step out, swallow their pride, and say it first: I’m sorry. Forgive me. I love you.
Don’t wait for your partner to go first. Take that step. It’s painful, but remember: Those 7 words also have the greatest payoff.
