Are you stuck? Do you feel like you’re living under a dark suppressing shadow that you can’t escape? Do feelings of prolonged helplessness, and discouragement, worthlessness, low self-esteem often invade your thoughts? Do these feelings keep you isolated and alone, disconnected from others? Do they cloud your decision-making process or has low mood become so pervasive that it has taken over all aspects of your life? If so you are not alone.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), approximately 25 percent of U.S. adults struggle with depression, anxiety or some combination of both. In any given year, roughly 6.9 percent of American adults — about 16 million people — live with depression. Approximately 18.1 percent — about 42 million — live with anxiety.

While the symptoms of depression are daunting, there is hope! Here at Core Values Counseling we understand depression and specialize in treating even the most severe forms. Working together with our clients we design individualized treatment plans that are tailored to meet each client’s specific needs. We are skilled at integrating many different counseling methodologies to affect change.

Here are just a few of the methodologies we use.

Psychotherapy & Interpersonal Therapy

We recognize that the causes of depression, genes, inflammation, environment, and trauma do not arise in a vacuum. The onset of depression is usually associated with things happening in a person’s life, generally, in association with the people, they feel close to. Or are related to events that have occurred in a person’s past. Using psychotherapy and Interpersonal Therapy we help our clients identify the factors that are contributing to their symptoms of depression. We look for the root of the cause aiding our clients as they address these personal problems, experiences, and or feelings. We help clients gain insight into what behaviors, emotions, and ideas are contributing to symptoms of depression assisting them in regaining a sense of control and pleasure in life.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is all about helping people take control of their brain by assisting them to change negative styles of thinking and behaviors that are often associated with depression. Using Cognitive Behavior Therapy, we support clients as they identify negative or false thoughts and replace those thoughts with healthier, more realistic ones. Examples of negative feelings might be Overgeneralization – drawing conclusions that are far too broad in terms of one single event. All-or-nothing thinking – viewing the world as entirely black-and-white. Automatically negative thoughts – experiencing scolding habitual thoughts. Rejecting the positive – disqualifying positive experiences and feeling that they “don’t count.” Focusing on one negative issue – dwelling on this consistently until your perception of reality is darkened.  These negative thought patterns leave people feeling hopeless. Recognizing and adopting new positive ways of thinking and experiencing the world can prove life-changing.

Mindfulness Practices

Mindfulness practices provide positive coping strategies, ways of acting and reacting to situations more intentionally instead of instinctually. Mindfulness helps us be present in our lives and gives us some control over our reactions and repetitive thought patterns.  It helps us pause, get a clearer picture of a situation, and respond more skillfully. At Core Values mindfulness practices are used to help clients recognized destructive patterns that are keeping them stuck and provide them with tools to experience a more purpose-filled life.

Neurofeedback & Electroencephalography (EEG)

Our brainwave profile and our daily experience of the world are inseparable.  When our brainwaves are out of balance, there are similar problems in our emotional or neuro-physical health. Research has identified brainwave patterns associated with many psychological and neurological conditions like depression, anxiety disorders, sleep problems, nightmares, hyper-vigilance, impulsive behaviors, anger, aggression, and chronic nerve pain. Here at Core Values, we offer Neurofeedback (EEG) individually and in correlation with therapy to treat symptoms of depression. Neurofeedback is a way to train brain activity. Using sensors on the scalp, we measure and monitor brainwave activity. With brain analysis software (Brain paint) we can identify what specific activity is giving rise to your symptoms and a training plan to help draw your brain into a comfortable, efficient state is created, helping reduce the negative symptoms of depression and allow for your brain to function at a more optimal state.

Using these methodologies, we offer a safe space where thoughts, feelings, and experiences can be explored, tools are offered, and the symptoms of depression are addressed.

Choosing to come to counseling to treat your symptoms of depression is a significant decision, one that can seem unfamiliar and scary.  You may have many questions swirling around in your head.
